POKOTABI / Aoki
中華 アオキ
In Shin-Ogawamachi, Shinjuku, Aoki serves a satisfying lineup of Japanese neighborhood Chinese classics, from meat and vegetable stir-fry sets to fried rice and crispy noodles under bean sprout gravy.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Perusing the strips of paper lining the wall to choose the day's meal is one of the classic, unpretentious pleasures of machi chuka—Japan's local Chinese diners. Tucked away in Shin-Ogawamachi, Shinjuku, Aoki offers a dependable menu built to satisfy hungry midday appetites.
The core of the menu revolves around teishoku sets, each served with steamed rice, soup, and pickles. Stir-fries like pork with mixed vegetables or pork with garlic chives are easy choices for getting plenty of greens. Alongside stir-fried dishes, the kitchen offers ginger pork, braised pork and tofu, as well as set meals centered on pan-fried gyoza, boiled dumplings, shumai, or spring rolls.
Noodle offerings include crispy fried noodles smothered in piping-hot bean sprout gravy, combining crisp textures with rich sauce, alongside light ramen featuring thin noodles in a gentle broth. Those arriving with a bigger appetite can opt for hearty fried rice or pair a bowl of ramen with a mini curry rice.
Aoki is open on weekdays from 11:00 to 16:00, providing an easy option for a standard lunch break or a slightly later meal. Note that payments are cash only, so it is best to have bills or coins ready before heading in.
